Dear CUADP/FADP media friends,
Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty is a participant in this action primarily as a member in several broader coalitions concerned with social justice. In particular, we are deeply concerned at the limitations being placed on individual civil liberties, protections, and privacy rights. Such limitations are vital to the production of "secret" and fabricated evidence, which leads to wrongful convictions. And Florida has a BIG problem with wrongful convictions (see < http://www.fadp.org/thefloridaproblem.html >). Further, we seek alternatives to the death penalty, and will be addressing that issue as it pertains to the "war against terrorism" at the rally. We hope to see you there.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Marking the Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.; Concerned Floridians Take Peace Rally to U.S.War Headquarters at MacDill AFB in Tampa
What: Peace Rally When: Saturday, January 19th, 1:00pm Where: Gadsden Park, 6901 S. MacDill at Marcum Dr., adjacent to MacDill AFB, Tampa Contact: Sandy Thompson (727) 698-3092, media@macdillpeacerally.org
On Saturday, January 19th, 2002, the newly formed Florida Alliance for Peace and Social Justice will hold a Peace Rally, beginning at 1pm at Gadsden Park, 6901 S. MacDill, adjacent to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. MacDill is the U.S. Central Command Headquarters for the war in Afghanistan, as well as for all present and presumed impending U.S. military operations throughout Central Asia, the Middle East and much of Africa. Rally organizers are calling for an end to the war effort and to the dismantling of cherished civil liberties.
The Peace Rally is being held on the weekend full of activities honoring the birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. in recognition of Dr. King's outspoken support for peace, non-violence and social and economic justice. For many, Dr. King's words from years ago still ring true when he said, "True peace is not merely the absence of tension. It is the presence of justice. The greatest irony and tragedy of all is that our nation, which initiated so much of the revolutionary spirit of the moder world is now cast in the mold of being an arch anti-revolutionary. We are engaged in a war that seeks to turn the clock of history back and perpetuate white colonialism."
A broad spectrum of individuals and organizations throughout Florida have formed the Florida Alliance for Peace and Social Justice in order to raise public awareness of, and opposition to, the Bush administration's war in Afghanistan and the dismantling of civil liberties within the U.S. Participants from throughout Florida as well as from other parts of the country are chartering buses and organizing carpools in order to participate in the Peace Rally. The Alliance has launched a web site to assist those interested in supporting the mobilization, at www.macdillpeacerally.org For more information, contact the Florida Alliance for Peace and Social Justice at (727) 826-6960.
The participating organizations, listed below, operate upon the following principles of unity: 1) Support Peace, Oppose war; 2) Support social justice in the U.S. and around the world; 3) Support civil liberties, oppose racial and religious attacks and bigotry; 4) Support the universal human rights of all people; 5) Oppose all forms of terrorism; 6) Respect the ideological and political beliefs of the members within the alliance; and 7) Conduct Alliance activities in adherence with the principles of non-violence.
The Florida Alliance for Peace and Social Justice was established in December of 2001. Participating organizations include the Pinellas Greens, the Sarasota Greens, the Indian River Greens, the Florida American Indian Movement, the St. Petersburg-based Coalition for Peace and Social Justice, the state-wide Florida Coalition for Peace and Justice, the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement, Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, the Collier Anti-War Movement, Umbrella for Justice from Palm Beach County, Reality News Network, the Broward Anti War Coalition and the Student/Farmworkers Alliance. Participants involved in organizing the MacDill Peace Rally also include members of the Quakers, the Green Party, the National Coalition Building Institute, Soulforce, Gulf Coast Women in Black, J.A.I.L. for Judges, the Salvation Navy and the Christian Party, along with students from USF Tampa and Hillsborough Community College.
